Family Day

Fun for the family day is Saturday, January 14, 2017

No pre-registration: first come, first served.

$3 fee for adults entering the museum.

All events take place at Museum of Natural History unless otherwise noted*

9-9:45 (O) Introduction to Birding and Habitat Hike (Audrey and Kyle Weichert) Learn to use binoculars, field guides, and discuss habitat needs during this short walk. Binoculars and field guides provided.
9:30-11:00 (O) Intermediate Birding (Tom and Owen Slater) Designed for kids ages 9 and older already familiar with binoculars and having some birding experience. Participants should bring their own binoculars, if possible.
9:30-10:15 (O) Learn to Track (Berry) Identify “who” made that track left behind.
10-10:45 (O) Introduction to Birding and Habitat Hike (Audrey and Kyle Weichert) Repeat of 9-9:45 event. Learn to use binoculars, field guides, and discuss habitat needs during this short walk. Binoculars and field guides provided.
10:30-1:30 (A) Bird, Learn, Make and Take (Beckman, O’Brien, Konrad, Johnsen, Little) Arts and crafts activities with bird related themes. $2 charge for materials. Ongoing with ‘in and out” privileges.
10:15-noon * Kayaking and Canoeing in the Bay (Sub Sea Tours) (Kimi and Matt Paradis) Those under 10 must be accompanied by an adult, $10 per person boat rental fee paid directly to Sub Sea Tours. 11:15-12 (LC) Rubbing Noses with Reptiles (Sheridan, Don and Shawna Quintana) Up close, hands on experience with reptiles. Free admission tickets available beginning 15 minute prior to show at registration / information table near gift shop entrance. Limited to 25 participants, one ticket given per person prior to show.
11:15-12 (O) Critter Crawl (Moonjian) Crawl, creep or slither along searching for bugs, insects, spiders, reptiles and birds around the State Park grounds. Participants must be at least 5 years of age.
12:15-1 (LC) Rubbing Noses with Reptiles (Sheridan, Don and Shawna Quintana) Repeat of 11:15-12 event. Free admission tickets available beginning 15 minute prior to show at registration / information table near gift shop entrance. Limited to 25 participants, one ticket given per person prior to show.
1:15-2 (LC) Birds in Your Neighborhood ( Johnsen) Presentation about birds likely to be found nearby your home: feathers, food, how to find them and more.
2-2:30 (A) Puppet show starring the Great Blue Heron (Winters) A fun learning experience for the entire family.
2:30-3 (LC) Gift Giveaway (Surbey) Family Day participants can receive a “thank you” gift from the Winter Bird Festival to take home. One gift per child.
NEW THIS YEAR: Birding for Teens! Join teen leaders Blythe and Fianna Wilde on this birding walk for teens 13-19 years old. Meet at the Museum of Natural History on Saturday, January 14th at 9:30AM. Expect the walk to conclude by 11AM. The walk will include the grounds around the museum and the adjoining Boardwalk and marina area. Blythe and Fianna are looking forward to meeting and inspiring other teens interested in birding. Event is FREE and requires neither an RSVP nor festival registration.
