“Wilson’s Warbler”
Susanna Lindsey is a self-taught artist and an amateur birder who has lived on the central coast since 2004. Residing in Pismo Beach, Sue derives immense joy from her art, the vibrant art community and the idyllic lifestyle offered by the area.
Sue has successfully run several businesses, but her artistic journey began in the 1970’s when she took classes in drawing and acrylic painting. Over the years she has explored various artistic mediums including watercolor, photography, ceramics, gourd art and metalwork, featuring jewelry and 3D projects. But a transition to abstract drawing marked a significant shift in her style, allowing her to embrace the freedom of artistic expression shown in “Wilson’s Warbler”.
Sue’s art has been featured at the Annual Beacon Art shows, at Brushstrokes, in the Clark Center (Arroyo Grande), and in numerous exhibitions at the Morro Bay Art Gallery. Sue has also served as a judge for the Annual Congressional Art Competition.
“Long-billed Curlew”
Diann Johnston, with a degree in botany from U.C. Berkeley and a painting degree from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, settled on a Central Coast Ranch where she walks daily, observing and appreciating the local bird life. She feels in awe of birds wherever she ventures.
The Snowy Owl became Diann’s “spark” bird after a chance encounter in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, where she was working on the pipeline. Many years later, on the remote island of Attu, a second encounter, this time with a pair of Snowy Owls, reminded her of that exhilaration with which birds, with their dramatic beauty and fragile power, can captivate us all.
Diann has travelled to many parts of the world and taken part in Birdathons, Christmas Bird Counts, and many other birding activities. Her art has covered many genres and included bronze sculpting, printmaking, pastel, oils, and watercolors. But birds remain a favorite subject, always reminding her to work in the present. Diann’s art has been featured in many Morro Bay Art Gallery exhibits and in 2014 her photorealistic representation of tangled beach kelp won best of show at Pastel USA.
“Strollin’ and Patrollin’”
The renowned American illustrator Charley Harper grew up on a West Virginia farm where he developed a unique love of and perspective on animals. A conservationist as well as an artist, Harper investigated unique aspects of wildlife through a highly stylized and instantly recognizable geometric reductionist approach.
Harper initially studied art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he later taught. Harper’s art has been shown at numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work has also graced advertising promotions and been commissioned by the Audubon Society, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the National Park Service, amongst others.
In the giclée “Strollin’ and Patrollin’” Harper focused his imagination on the synchronized scurrying of Sanderlings on a beach as they run with the ebb and flow of the surf. We are delighted to be able to offer this limited-edition Charley Harper hoodie at the Morro Bay Bird Festival and thank the family of Charley Harper for their permission to use this picture.
